Goltsblat BLP joins the Japanese Business Club

Goltsblat BLP, the Russian practice of the international law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP), has joined the Japanese Business Club (JBC). Established in 2007 in Moscow, the JBC performs the functions of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Moscow, promotes Japanese companies' business, facilitates communications and information exchange among its members, pursues all types of lobbying with Russian administrative structures and supports Japanese citizens based in Russia in their everyday lives. Today, the Club has 192 members, with membership open only to Russian companies with a Japanese element among their equity holders or to entities with Japanese-speaking staff.

Closer cooperation with the JBC is in line with Goltsblat BLP's vision of expanding our Asian presence. Our strategy is driven by the surging demand from both Russian and foreign clients for legal support in investment projects in Asia and Russia's Far East – two regions that have seen an explosion of interest over recent years.

Today, our clients include leading Japanese companies, such as Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Komatsu, Nichia Corporation, Nissan Russia, Panasonic and Toyoko Inn, to name just a few.

The Asia Practice of Goltsblat BLP is led by Partner Sergey Milanov. Sergey is currently the only foreign lawyer authorised to advise on Russian law in Japan. He has vast experience of advising on project finance in Energy & Resources and on major PSA projects for developing oil and gas fields in Russia’s Far East and Eastern Siberia, where the focus has been on both extraction facilities and the export infrastructure (pipelines, offshore terminals, etc.). Sergey is also experienced in handling Corporate/M&A transactions, JVs in Energy & Resources and green-field projects for establishing Japanese distributors, dealers and manufacturing subsidiaries in the Russian Federation.

Sergey Milanov, Partner, Head of the Asia Practice of Goltsblat BLP: “We do appreciate the warm welcome by the management of the Japanese Business Club and are prepared to candidly cooperate with its members. It is our hope that the broad range of expertise and wealth of experience of our professionals will benefit the Club members and propel the development of Japanese business in Russia”.
