Goltsblat BLP announces a recent boost to its Dispute Resolution, by welcoming Varvara Knutova as Head of Group


Goltsblat BLP, the Russian practice of the international law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP), announces that, consistent with the growing demand by our national and international clients for dispute resolution, specifically international litigation services, on 1 December 2014, we continued to boost our Dispute Resolution Pr actice by welcoming new Head of Group Varvara Knutova.

Before joining Goltsblat BLP, for six years, Varvara was Head of International Litigation and Arbitration Group, Dispute Resolution and Mediation Practice, at the Pepeliaev Group.

This team build-up stems from the marked growth and development of the Goltsblat BLP Dispute Resolution Practice, which the firm’s strategy positions as one of the key groups in the greatest demand. Today, the Practice boasts one of the biggest teams in Russia and enjoys an excellent market reputation. Over the last five years, the Practice’s key partners, Rustam Kurmaev and Elena Trusova, have been ranked as recommended specialists for dispute resolution, while the Practice itself has remained at the top of Legal 500 and Chambers. Varvara has extensive experience of working with major national and international companies. She specialises in conflict of laws, international trade, arbitration and domestic dispute resolution, international commercial arbitration and alternative dispute settlement, disputes over jurisdiction, enforcement of foreign court judgements and foreign arbitral awards and bankruptcy procedures. Varvara has participated in enforcement of foreign court judgements in Russia (including on the principles of reciprocity and international courtesy) and awards of international commercial arbitrations.

Varvara's recent highlights are as follows: representing the biggest deep oil conversion plant in the North-Western Region of the Russian Federation in the ICAC under the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation in a dispute against a general contractor; acting for a major American steel company in ad hoc international arbitration proceedings in accordance with the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules administered by the LCIA with respect to the applicable Russian law and subsequent successful recognition and enforcement of the arbitral award in Russia, in the light of the debtor evading participation in the proceedings; advising an international financial investor on a dispute in the ICAC under the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation over a multimillion contract for international sale of goods governed by the General Conditions of Goods Delivery from the USSR to the PRC (the Peoples' Republic of China) and from the PRC to the USSR.
